How the civics test works.
These are USCIS's rules. Its own pages are the official word.
Who takes it
Anyone who files Form N-400 on or after 20 October 2025 takes the 2025 civics test.
At the interview
A USCIS officer asks you up to 20 of the 128 questions, out loud. You pass with 12 correct answers, and the officer stops once you reach 12 right or 9 wrong.
Answers that change
Some answers depend on who holds office on the day of your interview. USCIS lists the current ones on its test updates page.
65 or older
If you're 65 or older and have been a permanent resident for 20 years or more, you take a 10-question test from a shorter set.
