The Buttonwood Agreement
American markets trace their formal birth to a single document. On May 17, 1792, twenty-four stockbrokers and merchants gathered outside 68 Wall Street in lower Manhattan and signed the Buttonwood Agreement, pledging to trade securities only among themselves at a fixed commission. It was named for the buttonwood (sycamore) tree under which they regularly met.
