WINTER OLYMPICS · FACT
International Winter Sports Week
The event we now call the first Winter Olympics wasn't planned as one. In 1924, the IOC staged a festival at Chamonix, France, under the modest name 'International Winter Sports Week.' It drew 16 nations and proved so popular that the IOC retroactively crowned it the first official Winter Olympic Games the following year, in 1925.
