SPANISH VERBS 1 · FACT

A Spanish infinitive ends in -ar, -er or -ir

The infinitive is the basic form of a verb, the form a dictionary lists. English marks it with the word to; Spanish marks it with an ending, so a Spanish infinitive is one word that ends in -ar, -er or -ir: hablar (to speak), comer (to eat), vivir (to live). These three endings sort Spanish verbs into three families, also called conjugations. The -ar family is the largest.

What you'll be able to do 17 objectives, from the pack's lessons
  • Recognize -ar, -er and -ir infinitives and their families, choose a verb's stem, and conjugate by replacing the infinitive ending.
  • Conjugate hablar, trabajar, estudiar, llegar and necesitar in the present, and use the él/ella form for usted and the ellos/ellas form for ustedes.
  • Recognize that Spanish usually drops the subject pronoun, keep it for contrast, clarity or courtesy with usted, and say "it" with no subject word.
  • Conjugate regular -er verbs such as comer, beber and leer, use usted and ustedes forms, and recognize tomar (heard for drinking in Mexico) as an -ar verb.
  • Conjugate regular -ir verbs such as vivir, escribir and recibir, and use the nosotros ending (-amos, -emos, -imos) as a clue to the verb family.
  • Use the Spanish present for habits, general facts, actions happening now and fixed near-future plans with a time word.
  • Conjugate ser in the present and use it to say where someone is from, what they do, what they are like and what time it is.
  • Conjugate estar with its written accents, and choose estar rather than ser for where something is and how someone is right now.
  • Conjugate ir in the present, say where you are going (using al when a meets el) and what you are going to do, and use vamos a for let's.
  • Conjugate querer, pensar and empezar in the present, keeping the e in nosotros, and recognize that some e verbs, such as beber, stay regular.
  • Conjugate poder, dormir, volver and jugar in the present, keeping the o or u in nosotros, and recognize that comer stays regular.
  • Conjugate pedir, servir and repetir (e to i, -ir verbs only), keep the e in nosotros, and choose pedir or preguntar.
  • Conjugate the seven -go verbs in the present: the -go yo form, regular endings in hacer, poner, salir and traer, and the stem change in tener, venir and decir.
  • Say conozco, sé, veo and doy, keep the other forms regular, choose saber or conocer by what you know, and put the personal a before a person.
  • Say what someone has to do with tener que, what one has to do with hay que and what you can do with poder, and ask permission or make a request.
  • Say what people like with gusta or gustan and me, te, le, nos or les, add an optional a phrase, keep the article, and say what you love with encantar.
  • Use no before the verb or before me, te or le, ask yes/no questions and questions with dónde, cuándo or qué, and answer with No, no ...
